The heartwood of this remarkable, still-thriving sessile oak has been gradually hollowed out
by fungal decay, forming a striking cylindrical cavity within its trunk. Climbing
inside, one is met with a breathtaking interplay of texture and colour where
the intricacy of decomposing wood is contrasted against a luminous sky. It is
astonishing how the tree endures, sustained solely by the outer rings of
sapwood that continue to channel life-giving nutrients. My painting captures a
fleeting moment in this tree’s ongoing cycle of growth and decay, a testament
to both its resilience and its inevitable transformation.
