Majestic Chestnut

Entering Knole Park through the ‘Hole in the Wall’ gate from Seal Hollow Road, the beauty, peace, and calm of the park feel like a tonic after the busy road left behind. Immediately, you are greeted by the magnificent stature and girth of this majestic sweet chestnut. Its intriguing root structure and basal burrs are reminiscent of a sleeping dragon, anchoring it firmly to the earth.

My painting portrays the tree in winter, capturing the deeply grooved fissures as they spiral upwards around the trunk. A low viewpoint, looking up, emphasises the tree’s solidity and immense weight. The distinctive shape of its upper branches reveals its history of pollarding, being once pruned to encourage dense new growth, control its size, and extend its lifespan.

This ancient landmark now serves as a natural meeting point for runners and walkers at the north-west end of the park. From here, the Plymouth Lodge gates and the Great Knole Wall are visible, as well as the path leading up towards Knole House.
