Lovers’ initials are occasionally discovered carved into the bark of old trees. Through painting, we can explore these romantic gestures without causing harm to the living tree.

A rusty drawing pin found beside a set of initials on a tree near Knole House inspired Jackie to imagine the story behind these marks and continue their narrative. Are they traces of an enduring love, sustained through a quiet exchange of messages over time? Or perhaps the signs of a rekindled romance, where a newly pinned note and a bright new drawing pin symbolise hope and a fresh beginning? However, only the tree and the lovers can truly know.

This work reflects on the human desire to leave a mark, and the ways in which our stories become intertwined with the lives of the trees around us.
