One occasionally stumbles upon lovers’ initials carved into the bark of old trees. Thankfully, art allows us to explore these romantic gestures, expressions of love and commitment, without causing further harm to the living tree.

A rusty drawing pin, found near a set of initials on a lime tree close to Knole House, led me to imagine the story of the couple behind them and to extend their narrative through my painting. Is theirs an enduring love, sustained by a quiet, ongoing exchange of messages? Or perhaps a rekindled romance, marked by a freshly pinned note and a bright new drawing pin, symbolising hope and renewal?
