Knole Tree Gallery:
Nature’s Own Sculpture Trail
by Jackie Gwyther
Introduction
Monuments are often seen as fixed points in time, commemorating shared values and collective history. Trees, however, offer a different kind of monumentality, one that exists in tension with the ephemeral. They stand for decades, some even centuries, yet they are never static; they grow, decay, and transform with the seasons. This duality is at the heart of Jackie Gwyther’s project, Knole Tree Gallery: Nature’s Own Sculpture Trail, which explores the evocative power of trees, capturing their grandeur while acknowledging their impermanence.
Over the last twenty years Jackie has developed an enormous affection for this historic deer park. Knole Park’s trees embody both resilience and vulnerability and offer endless creative inspiration. Each season brings a new perspective, reminding us that even the most enduring landscapes are in constant flux. Through her paintings, Jackie shares her not only her love of trees but also the profound benefits of experiencing nature first hand.
The Exhibition
The multi-layered artistic experience commences with an exhibition of Jackie’s emotive oil paintings of remarkable trees of Knole Park, each infused with Jackie’s personal narrative and commentary on the natural world. Featured works include a fire-damaged hollow beech, a ‘dancing’ hornbeam, spinning sycamore seeds, a majestic sweet chestnut, and an intricate exposed root system. Each drawing attention to the trees’ roles as both a witness to time and a fleeting moment of natural beauty. The gallery exhibition will be enhanced by an artist’s talk, a botanical still life oil painting demonstration and workshops.
This exhibition is kindly supported by the Sevenoaks Visual Arts Forum (SVAF) and is to be held at the Kent County Council Sevenoaks Kaleidocsope Gallery.

Community involvement through Instagram
Jackie intends to extend this dialogue through an interactive Instagram platform documenting the community’s own ephemeral encounters with nature and artistic responses using the hashtag #knoletreegallery and the tree’s indivdual hashtag such as #magesticchestnut. Visitors are encouraged to share their thoughts and feelings about these trees through photographs, paintings, drawings, sculpture, poetry or prose.
The project has potential to extend way beyond the trees featured in the gallery exhibition. With such a diverse range of remarkable specimens in Knole Park, Jackie invites people to suggest their own special trees in Knole, which can be added to the database, for others to discover, enjoy, explore and be creatively inspired by.
This interactive experience and growing archive should facilitate increased engagement of the public with the visual arts, nature and most importantly Knole Park.
The Book
The project will culminate with publishing a collection of the most interesting, inspiring, artistic work, personal narratives and walking trails in a book for all to enjoy. It will also offer insight into Jackie’s botanical art practice, alongside reflections on the restorative benefits of walking and observing trees in their natural setting.
